Qualifications:  Good degree in relevant subject and teaching qualification (PGCE, Cert Ed, DET).

The Economics department has grown significantly this year and is seeking a new member of the team to deliver A-level Economics.

Business A Level currently has 340 students enrolled across years 1 and 2.  A similar number are enrolled on our BTEC L3 National Extended Certificate and Diploma across Year 1 and 2.

The Economics and Business teachers form proactive and supportive teams, collaboratively developing resources and techniques.  Economics and Business teams are based in the same teaching area of the college.  

Curriculum resources are of a high standard and shared among staff. The subject areas have the advantage of a Library & Curriculum Support Officer who helps co-ordinate and compile learning resources.

Members of the teaching staff are also personal tutors. Tutors monitor progress and offer support and guidance to twenty-five students. The ability to contribute to the enrichment programme would also be welcome.

Varndean Sixth Form College is a popular and successful college in Brighton and Hove, offering a wide range of A Level, vocational and International Baccalaureate courses to around 2,000 students aged 16–19. A member of the thriving Science Faculty, Physics is taught in a suite of 2 well equipped laboratories by 4 members of staff. A team of five technical staff offer an outstanding level of support for the sciences, with two part-time technicians dedicated to Physics. The department is well resourced, and all teachers follow a unified scheme of work and currently deliver their course using a bespoke CENTURY Tech programme. Staff are expected to share materials for teaching and assessment under the direction of the Head of Subject.  The A level course follows the AQA specification with the Astrophysics option.   Of course, the successful candidate will be encouraged to shape the future of the Physics Department according to approaches they believe will continue to deliver outstanding results.

The Role

We are seeking an exceptional Director of Student Support to assist the Vice Principal (Pastoral) in the strategic leadership of our Student Support provision with a focus on ensuring a safe, inclusive learning environment in which all students can thrive and reach their full potential.

The postholder will act as the College’s:

  • Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL)
  • Designated Senior Mental Health Lead (DSMHL)
  • Strategic SEND Lead

The Director of Student Support will provide effective management and support for the Head of Wellbeing, the SEND Manager and the Safeguarding Team, and will contribute to whole-college strategy, policy and quality improvement. The role will also involve collaboration with colleagues in similar roles across the Horsham Learning Alliance.

The postholder will be entirely focused on Safeguarding, Wellbeing and SEND and as such, the role does not include curriculum teaching responsibility. However, there will be an opportunity to contribute to the College’s programme of Personal Development activities.

Qualifications:  Good degree in relevant subject and teaching qualification (PGCE, Cert Ed, DET).
Experience:  Current or recent experience of teaching Engineering (or related qualifications) at level 3 desirable. Applications are welcomed from ECT’s.  
Knowledge and Skills:  An excellent understanding of Engineering principles and the ability and motivation to up-skill. Good practical skills, including workshop and lab safety. The ability to use CAD is desirable.

As a growing member of the thriving Science Faculty Engineering BTEC is taught in our well-equipped technology centre’s workshop and computer rooms, supported by a member of technician staff. The course follows Pearson’s Advanced Applied Qualification (AAQ) specification.

Members of the teaching staff are also personal tutors. Tutors monitor progress and offer support and guidance to twenty-five students. The ability to contribute to the enrichment programme would also be welcome.

We are seeking to appoint a highly literate, calm and friendly administrator, with IT skills and a positive ‘can do’ attitude. This role was trialled for one year on a fixed-term basis and we now want to make it permanent, following a successful first year. You will be able to manage information and data swiftly and accurately, have excellent written English and confidence in using Microsoft Office software and communication tools. You will have excellent organisational skills and will be able to work using your own initiative, prioritising your tasks effectively to work efficiently and meet tight deadlines.

Your main role will be to support the Director of Governance/Clerk to the Governors, but you will also be able to assist the Principal’s EA, the Senior Leadership Team and the wider Reception Team. The role is varied and interesting and will contribute to the smooth running of the Governance administration within the college.

You will work with various college teams using a wide range of software packages. You will receive full training and support on these as required but must be experienced in the use of Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook and be ready to learn other, similar communications software and platforms. You will also be given the opportunity to become a college First Aider and will be First Aid At Work trained and Mental Health First Aid trained, should you choose to do so.

Contract details:

  • Permanent
  • Part time: 21 hours per week
  • Term Time Only, 40 weeks per year (term time plus 6 days to be worked during the summer holidays). Some of those days will fall during A-Level results week, mid-August, onwards.
  • Working pattern: Required to work on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays (7 hours per day, exact timings to be agreed)
  • Pro-rata Salary: £14,125 per annum (based on spine point 11 of grade 4 in the Support Staff pay spine for which full-time salary is £28,634 per annum).
  • Salary increases annually up to £15,452 over 4 years (based on a full-time salary £31,324 per annum)
  • 2 weeks holiday pay included in pro-rata salary
